Case odds and expected value: the average open loses money

The gold slot exists, but at 0.26% it comes up so seldom that a typical opening ends in a loss.

The gold slot sits at 0.26% in Valve's published odds

Mil-Spec is where most openings end up. Valve publishes 79.92% for that tier, and the whole ladder below works as a baseline for every official case built the same way. The gold slot, formally the rare special item, is a knife or a pair of gloves.

Rare special0.26%Roughly 1 in 385 opens

Most openings are misses, so the average loses

To get expected value, multiply every possible item's worth by the odds of landing it and add the results. The price side is easy to read: Steam posts the key price, long fixed near $2.49 in the US store, and the case costs extra.

Roughly four openings in five finish in Mil-Spec, and on an active case those skins are frequently worth only cents. Rare hits must pay for every one of those misses. When a case still drops every week, they typically do not.

Ending a case's run does not repair the arithmetic. With no new supply, the case price tends to rise, so opening costs more, unless the skins inside gained even more.

Downside: sitting on a rare container is a different bet from cracking it open. We skip profit rankings of cases on this site, since they go stale as soon as prices move.

A free spin leaves the odds where they were

Third-party sites that give away a registration spin also write the prize table, and cheap results are the product. Promotions get priced through a minimum withdrawal, a wagering requirement or a mandatory deposit. Repeating the offer on dozens of accounts cannot turn a losing table into income. Bans are the usual outcome.
